The History Tower
âMeah!â Jiva yowled, jumping off of Micaâs lap. Falling forward, Mica caught the edge of the table with her free hand, a few drops of whiskey splashing on the fleeing animalâs tail.
âHmm?â Mica mumbled, realizing that she had almost fallen asleep. She set the glass down and blinked. No, she remembered, she wasnât at Kleinâs; it was just her and Jiva on the tiny island.
The whiskey wasnât necessary, but it helped with her pain, which had been more acute since Atesh and Cor left a couple of days ago. They said theyâd be back soon, and she hadnât thought anything of their leaving. Now, she missed having them around. They calmed her. Admittedly, Cor and Atesh mostly sat in their mind-expanding garden talking about the magic of the universe. But still, their presence was reassuring.
With Atesh and Cor gone, Mica had made a short shopping trip to an island chain Atesh had seen to the north. Using a stacked cart with crude wooden wheels, sheâd picked up a few things that sheâd been missing, including some decent dinnerware, several jugs of whiskey, and a nice supply of salted boar.
Sheâd felt a bit embarrassed getting back into her small boat with the heavy cart, as the heavy glasswareâadmittedly, filled with whiskeyâplaced her small ship lower in the water than was probably safe.
That wasnât the point, though. It was dangerous to leave their new home unattended, and she just didnât want to have to go back to the market for a while. Anyway, they had room for the extra supplies; sheâd built storage areas into her own room as well as in the kitchen. She placed the whiskey in her room, along with the boar. She respected Corâs beliefs regarding animals, but sheâd grown up enjoying a rich variety of salty meats and didnât see what harm it would do.
âUnless youâre the boar,â she joked. Curse it. The last thing she was going to do was start thinking like that wizard woman, whether she liked her or not.
âI live in the real world is all,â she muttered. âJiva, come on. Donât leave. Stay with me.â She threw back the rest of the whiskey and pushed the glass to the side.
Jiva curled up in the corner as Mica fell asleep on her arms.
